Flooding
Flooding is a natural occurrence caused by heavy rain. If it rains hard enough or long enough, low-lying areas are at risk of flooding. A flash flood occurs when the amount of rainfall overwhelms our natural and man-made drainage systems or low-lying areas. Generally, one inch of rain per hour will cause flash flooding.
Flooding does not necessarily mean problems with the storm drainage system. Drainage systems, including storm drains, pipes, ditches and creeks, are designed to hold a specific amount of storm water.
Extra Water Has to Go Somewhere
There is a limit to how much water our creeks can hold. If enough rain falls in a short amount of time, creeks naturally overflow onto the floodplain. Floodplains are designed by nature to flood. For that reason, floodplains are part of a healthy creek system.
Maintenance and Inspection of Storm Drainage Facilities
Storm inlets and outfall facilities are inspected twice a year before the projected heavy rain season (normally March and August). Debris is removed from inlet boxes and any repair work necessary is scheduled to be accomplished as soon as practical.
To prevent flooding from block drainage systems, keep your streets and gutters free of leaves and debris. A few clogged drains can induce localized flooding that can cause severe damage to surrounding properties.
Low Water Crossings
Colleyville has floodgates at six locations: Jackson, Bedford Road, Cheshire, Martin Parkway, and two on Oak Knoll. During times of heavy rain, the gates will be closed to keep the traveling public safe from these areas.
Sandbags
The city has sandbags on hand at the Public Works Operations Facility located at 1601 Hall Johnson Road for severe weather conditions. Colleyville residents are allowed to pick-up 25 bags for residential properties, while supplies last, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Quantities are not guaranteed therefore, call ahead to ensure availability at 817.503.1360. These are provided, with proof of residency, without charge to Colleyville residents who need them. Used sandbags are the property of the customer and may NOT be returned to the City of Colleyville. Sandbags should be acquired PRIOR to an emergency situation as crews are not available to replenish supplies during those times.
