Contaminants or polluting substances can enter the drinking water supply when the pressure of polluted source exceeds the pressure of the potable source. This action is called backflow and it is typically caused by back siphonage or backpressure. Backflow preventers/assemblies prevent the entry of harmful substances into the drinking water supply.

The Cross Connection and Backflow Prevention Program protects the City water supply system by eliminating potential sources of contamination resulting from illegal cross connections and backflow. The program is administered by Vepo, LLC.
